When to Go

Malia's warm temperatures are inviting throughout the year. Summer months provide 12 hours of sunshine, almost no rain and the warmest temperatures, particularly in July and August. Temperatures above 20 are not uncommon from May to October, with the mercury rising into the 30s during July and August. If travelling to Malia for sightseeing or to explore the countryside, spring and autumn provide more comfortable temperatures that hover around in the mid-20s.

For watersport enthusiasts, you can head out on a jet-ski or banana boat from one of several shops at Glozanie Beach. Family-friendly Sun Beach has an inviting children's lido, while Potomas Beach is a popular choice among locals looking for a quiet place to relax. There are also plenty of cultural and recreational activities to make the most of your stay, including scuba diving or unwinding at the WaterCity waterpark, exploring Samaria Gorge or Imbros Gorge, shopping on Beach Road, trying traditional dishes in the old town, or finding genuine crafts at the Aghios Nikolaos Market or Kritsa. Malia is also a gateway to some of the most archeologically significant sites in Crete, including historic Heraklion. In town, visitors can explore the ruins of a Minoan palace. One of the largest cities in Greece, Heraklion is just a 45-minute drive from the resort town. Visitors exploring this part of the island can see the impressive Bronze Age ruins of Knossos, the Venetian fortress of Koules and the Venzir Mosque, which dates back to the nineteenth century and the Ottoman Empire. From Heraklion, visitors can also travel by ferry to Athens, Santorini or Rhodes.
