When to Go

Malgrat de Mar and Costa Brava have a mild and temperate climate. While winters are relatively cool, summer months offer plenty of sunshine and hear. Warm temperatures prevail from May to October, with July and August being the hottest months. Water temperatures are warmest between July and September. August is the busiest time of the year in Costa Brava, with beaches crowded with visitors from across Spain and Europe. The month is also the hottest time of the year.

Malgrat de Mar has plenty of historic sights to admire. Top sights include the Church of St. Nicolau, which was built during the 16th century and expanded in the 18th century. Peixateries Velles is the town's old fish market and is north of the meat market, both worth a visit for a taste of local charm and culture. Other sites include the Modernist-style Town Hall and the 16th century La Cooperativa Library. El Castell, a hilltop tower situated in the centre of town, offers panoramic views of Malgrat de Mar.

Malgrat de Mar has several natural wonders to unwind with a scenic walk or to just relax. Top beaches include L’Astillero next to the main hotel district, Central Beach across from the town centre, and Tordera Beach close to the mouth of the Tordera River. Pla de Grau to the east boasts traditional agricultural landscapes, while the Tordera Delta is an excellent spot for bird watching and catching glimpses of sharks and dolphins. Inspired by children's stories, the Parc Francesc Macià is a family favourite and the largest park in Malgrat.

After a day of relaxing on the beach or enjoying some of the water or land activities, visitors can unwind at a local restaurant with traditional Catalan cuisine or an international dish. Although the nightlife in family-friendly Malgrat de Mar is not as busy as other nearby resorts, there are several bars where you can enjoy a drink, comedy shows, or karaoke. Neighbouring Lloret de Mar boasts a younger and more boisterous nightlife with bustling clubs and bars that attract revellers from across Spain and Europe.

Nearby Blanes is home to several exciting summer festivals. The eight-day festival of Santa Anna is held towards the end of July, between the 21st and 27th of the month. The last full week of July is also when the Concurs de Focs d’Artifici is held in Blanes. The major international fireworks competition attracts more than 500,000 visitors, who admire thrilling and colourful fireworks displays from various countries.
