A suburb of Palma, Cala Mayor is surprisingly undiscovered given its location close to Majora's largest and capital city. The town is home to the Spanish Royal Family's summer residence, Marivent. Unlike more popular beaches east of Palma, Cala Mayor's beach is sheltered by rocky outcrops and offers calmer, clearer waters. It is just 12 miles or under 20 kilometres from Majorca's main international airport.
When to Go
With sunshine and clear days, Cala Mayor is an ideal destination year-round with daytime highs rarely dipping under 20. Temperatures start to rise in May with the mercury reaching the mid-20s. Temperatures stay warm into October, although the hottest months are July and August when temperatures soar into the 30s.
Where to Stay
The luxurious Hotel Nixe Palace overlooks Cala Mayor's fine white-sand beach, which stretches 200 metres along the Mediterranean. The beachfront, Mediterranean-style property has three restaurants offering delicious local and international cuisine. The Luabay Marivent Hotel is home to the Luabay Beach Club. Offering views of the beach and sea, the club is a great place to unwind with a cocktail or enjoy a meal. The Be Live Adults La Cala is just seconds from the beach and a 25-minute walk from the heart of Palma. There is a poolside bar, an a la carte restaurant, and a breakfast terrace with sea views. Next door is the Be Live Marivent, which shares a gorgeous spa with modern treatment cabins and relaxation zone. Modern rooms are stylish with modern, simple designs.
Attractions & Events
In addition to swimming and relaxing on its fine sandy beach, the town is also popular with sailors. Cala Mayor's sailing school has training courses for all ages. Sant Agusti and its beautiful harbour are also nearby, providing a base for fishing boats as well as sailing and fishing excursions. The Fundació Pilar I Joan Miró is a must-see for art lovers. With about 2,500 works by Miró, the art gallery also has 100 paintings by Pablo Picasso. Also close is the Royal Bendinat Golf Club and Puerto Portals.
Cala Mayor is the closest blue flag beach to the island's capital, Palma. The city offers a great option for a day trip, whether for shopping or a night out. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment options in the city. Palma's historic attractions include the Gothic-style Cathedral. Work on the massive building began in 1229 and lasted some 400 years. There is also the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art with works on display by Picasso, Cézanne and others.
