Budapest  Breaks

About Budapest

When to Go

Budapest's continental climate brings hot summers and chilly winters to the city. Weather-wise, Budapest is a town of contrasts, as August temperatures can easily reach 30 °C and then plummet to below zero in December, January, and February. Snowfall is abundant during the winter months and up until the beginning of May. However, don't be too quick to dismiss the idea of taking a short break in Budapest during the winter, as the city has a very special and almost magical appeal at that time of the year, particularly if you are planning a spa break or a shopping trip to the city. Christmas in Budapest is also an unforgettable experience.

Where to Stay

Some hotel chains like Best Western, City Inn, and Atrium offer great weekend deals at their cheap hotels in the heart of Budapest. If you want to splurge during your stay in the city, some deals are available in boutique and luxury hotels like the splendid Gellert Hotel or the Corinthia, which is within walking distance of the city's most beautiful attractions.

Attractions & Events

Downtown Budapest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is peppered with museums, palaces, and perfectly landscaped gardens. Some must-sees while in the city include the neo-gothic Parliament Building, the Jewish Quarter, the Royal Palace, Budapest's central market, and the Opera House. The city has a thriving cafe culture and there are plenty of charming coffee shops, street restaurants, and bookshop / coffee houses where you can stop for a rest after a day of sightseeing. The evening is the perfect time of the day to go on a river cruise along the Danube or to walk up to Gellert Hill to enjoy some fine panoramic views over the illuminated Buda Castle, the Parliament, and the famous Chain bridge. Budapest is also known for having some of Europe's most impressive natural spas. The hot springs at Szechenyi Spa come highly recommended anytime of the year, but come here in the winter and you'll enjoy the unique experience of sitting in a naturally heated outdoor pool while snow flakes fall all around you. Budapest is considered one of the world's classical music capitals. World-class ballet and opera performances are held at the imposing Opera House throughout the year. In June, the National Concert Hall hosts the Wagner Festival. If rock music and world cuisine are your kind of thing, don't miss the Sziget Festival in August.
