The relatively new town of Vilamoura is the largest privately built resort in Europe. Created in 1974, beginning with the marina that lies at its heart, this Algarve resort attracts the rich and famous as well as the less affluent, due to the range of attractions and accommodation available. Visitors enjoying luxury holidays may bring their own yachts and top-of-the-range golf equipment, while those who have grabbed A1 Travel's best deals and special offers can just as easily hire a boat or golf clubs. As the widely acknowledged golfing capital of Europe, there is always a high proportion of tourists enjoying golf breaks but there is plenty more to do, with boating, tennis, a great shopping centre and the large Vilamoura Casino that hosts shows and dances as well as having the usual casino games for the adult crowd.
The weather is great for a holiday at any time of year, with scarcely any rain and temperatures that almost never drop below mild. The coldest weather happens between late October and early March, with those autumn and winter months experiencing almost all of what little rainfall there is and with temperatures falling to averages in the low teens. The hottest weather occurs at the peak of the tourist season during July & August, with highs in the low thirties and a comfortable average of around 24 degrees, which is not too hot for UK visitors, making it ideal for a family holiday.
Beaches around Vilamoura
Vilamoura has two main beaches, Praia da Marinha and Praia da Falésia, the former being relatively small and ringed with coves that are accessible at low tide. The Michelin Guide describes this as one of the top ten European beaches and it attracts visitors who are interested in snorkelling, boating and exploring the coves, cliffs and rock pools. Stretching out to the west, Praia da Falésia runs all the way to Olhos de Água, fringed by stunning red cliffs; it's is very popular with walkers and cyclists as it consists of five miles of flat sand. Close to several restaurants and cafés, with a number of beach bars spaced along it and sun beds and parasols for hire, it’s popular with families, couples and sun-worshippers alike! If the balmy blue waters are too tame for you, the resort is close to Quarteira, where you can find the Aquashow Water Park or, for a great family trip, you can head to Krazy World fun park at Algoz where there is entertainment for all ages.
Golf in Vilamoura
Of course, Vilamoura is famous as an ideal location for a golfing holiday, with several courses, including championship courses such as Arnold Palmer’s Oceanico Victoria, as well as ones that will allow novices to play a round or even have some lessons.
