Halkidiki  Holidays

About Halkidiki

The trident-shaped peninsula of Halkidiki sits on the eastern part of Greek Macedonia in Northern Greece. With nearly 500 kilometres of coastline, Halkidiki offers superb beaches and unforgettable natural beauty. The area is a scenic spot to enjoy the Aegean Sea with inviting beaches that are embraced by lush green forests. Halkidiki is easily accessible from Thessaloniki with frequent bus connections. There are also regular ferry connections from the port of Kavala. Whether looking for a family holiday or a cheap package holiday, Halkidiki's beautiful beaches and remarkable culture is an excellent setting for your getaway.

When to Go

Summer is a perfect time to appreciate all the Halkidiki has to offer, particularly between May and September. Temperatures rise above 30 in July and August, and more comfortable temperatures in the mid-20s are typical for May and September. Not only do you experience some of the best weather with warm temperatures and long sunny days, summer months host a wealth of cultural and sporting events for visitors of all ages. From music festivals and concerts to open air theatre productions and swimming races, there is so much to experience when visiting in the summer.

Where to Stay

Halkidiki is home to major hotels and resorts, offering the highest service standards. Many hotels and resorts are based around the cosmopolitan Kassandra on the western side of Halkidiki. The small peninsula is the mythical site of the Clash of the Titans. The town has some of the biggest and best clubs and bars in Halkidiki, including trendy beach bars. Accommodation options range from sophisticated spa hotels to family-friendly apartment hotels. Major resorts in Kassandra include Sani Beach Hotel & Spa and Porto Sani Village Suite and Spa in Sani, which boasts a modern marina and a large sandy beach. These are excellent options for a luxury getaway with top amenities and world class service. Other resorts include the Oceania Club & Spa in Nea Moudania, which is home to one of Greece's largest fishing ports and plenty of shopping options. The picturesque village of Kriopigi is a great natural escape with affordable accommodation options, including the Aegean Aparthotel and the Hotel Kassandra Bay. For a more traditional experience, seafront guesthouses dot the coast of Sithonia. Home to the ancient city of Olynthus, the rugged peninsula next to Kassandra is dominated by dense pine forests that rise at the edge of fine beaches. Sithonia is also a great spot for camping, with several well-situated campsites and hiking trails. Here, visitors can relax in undiscovered bays and secluded coves or explore the lush forests on foot or by bike.

Attractions and Events

From enchanting blues of the sea to fresh green forests, Halkidiki offers the very best of land and sea holidays. On land, anyone who enjoys the outdoors will feel at home with well-groomed and less travelled trails for mountain biking and walking. Visitors will appreciate the ability to roam freely among towering forests of chestnut, fir, oak and pine trees and come across hidden springs. Halkidiki is also home to one of the most impressive cave systems in Europe, the Cave of Petralona. Exciting watersports can be enjoyed throughout the peninsula, including diving, snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The possibilities are endless with clear waters to swim and sail across, countless coves to explore for divers, and excellent facilities in Kassandra and Sithonia to make sure you have all the equipment you need to experience thrills on the open water. Each year in July there a major 26-kilometre swimming competition takes place at Toroneos, which attracts swimmers and sports lovers from around the world. A number of unique archeological wonders are waiting to be explored. Among them is Ancient Olynthus, a well-preserved city from the Greek Classical period. The oldest known Greek mosaic flooring is found here, which influenced mosaics in Dion, Aigai and Pella. There is also Stageira, the birthplace of famed philosopher Aristotle. A great example of a city that thrived during the Classical Period, remnants of an acropolis, fortifications, ancient homes and temples can be explored. A solemn, well-preserved Christian monument is found amidst the natural beauty of Mount Athos. The stunning site evokes the Byzantine culture that once heavily influenced this part of Greece. Major festivals in Halkidiki include the Sani Festival, a prestigious event organised at a natural amphitheatre. Open-air performances are held over two months, including dynamic jazz performances and memorable Shakespearean plays in the most unlikely of venues. The Sardine Festival of Nea Moudania offers visitors a week of live music and theatre, as well as dancing and local dishes. A large community feast with local red and white wines and local dishes is staged on Sunday with the festival's namesake serving as a major ingredient.
