If you've never considered a holiday to Croatia, it's time to put that right with a city break or beach holiday in beautiful Dubrovnik. Perfectly balancing the historical with the modern, the city has more than its fair share of ancient buildings, many of which are situated in Dubrovnik's Old Town which is surrounded by impressively preserved walls, yet it also offers ample opportunities for shopping, dining out and enjoying the sparkling nightlife. With a number of beaches nearby, it's easy to combine the best of city life with an active or restful seaside getaway.
Things to do in Dubrovnik
No visitor should leave the city without taking a tour of the walls, which provide stunning views of the Old Town, the surrounding areas of the city and the Adriatic Sea, so whatever you do, you mustn't forget your camera! Inside the walls, you'll experience some uniquely Croatian bars, cafés and shops; enjoy the bohemian feel and the live music at the Troubadour, treat yourself to a Croatian coffee outside one of the cafés on Stradun, Old Town's most famous street or pop into Djardin to browse for deals on gifts and mementos.
Enjoy the sea air
One of the many things that makes this a great location for a family holiday is the proximity of beaches offering activities for the young and the not-so-young alike. Not far from the Ploče Gate in the walls, lies Banje, a beach that is partially sandy and partially pebbly and which boasts showers and toilets for public use and also has inflatables, jet skis, deckchairs and sunbeds for hire. It's popular with local families and tourists and, being so close to the town and hotels, is easy to access, even for those with very young children. Dubrovnik's most popular beach, however, is the Copacabana at Lapad. Aimed at tourists, this beach has banana boats, pedalos, water chutes, jet skis and a lot more; it's definitely more for the active than those who want to sleep in the sun.
Where to stay
With tourism accounting for a sizeable proportion of Croatia's economy, there is a wide range of accommodation available, from self-contained villas or bed and breakfast establishments to modern apartments and large hotel complexes. The hotel Epidaurus, for example, has a variety of rooms, offers baby-sitting as a charged extra and has outdoor pools, children's clubs, Wi-Fi, highly praised bars and restaurants and evening entertainment. A package holiday here would be an unforgettable experience and it could even be all inclusive, making planning your finances a lot easier.
